Either make the tree good and its fruit good, or make the tree bad and its fruit bad, for the tree is known by its fruit. You brood of vipers! How can you speak good things when you are evil? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. The good person brings good things out of a good treasure, and the evil person brings evil things out of an evil treasure.

Matthew 12:33-35

When you read the Book of Matthew, you can sense what Jesus was passionate about, particularly matters of the heart. For Jesus, when the values he instills are embodied in our actions, our lives will flourish.

"Out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks."

This is the kind of life that Jesus envisions for those who follow him.

One of Jesus' main critiques was aimed at the religious leaders known as the Pharisees. Jesus criticized their religious beliefs and legalistic practices for being disconnected from the heart.

The stories we read during the Advent season often carry a sense of tension. For example, consider Joseph's disorienting situation with Mary, who was pregnant as a virgin and unmarried, having to give birth in a place where animals are kept. Yet, amidst this chaos and disorientation, something beautiful is born.

We may wonder what peace can bring to our lives, especially when it feels like nothing works in our favor.

There may be times when it seems we are constantly searching for stability. However, it is often in these moments that something good can be nurtured, even when it feels impossible to recognize.

What is being born in your life right now?

Lord, now let your servant depart in peace, according to your word, for my eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared in the sight of all peoples, a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and the glory of your people Israel. Amen.

Song of Simeon
